OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

“A brooding calm in all the air,
A dreamy quiet everywhere...
A golden glow to light the day
That fades in purple mists away-
This soothing calm, this presence bright,
October's sweet and mellow light”

Phoebe A. Holder
A Song of October

It seems like the Summer holidays only just ended, yet later this month, schools in the UK will be enjoying their half term break. How did the time pass so quickly! The clocks go back in October, signalling a definitive end to the Summer, as the days get shorter and the nights grow longer. At the end of the month of course, it's also Halloween, so we'll be trick or treating; then before we know it, the count down to Christmas will begin. October, has ostensibly become Art month in the capital, with art fair juggernaut Frieze and Frieze Masters leading the way, followed by a plethora of other exciting launches, fairs and exhibitions. So whether you are visiting from abroad, or whether you live locally, make the most of what is usually a pleasant, mellow month, full of colour, and explore all that is available in our wonderful city. We've picked our October highlights for you below.

GAUGIN PORTRAITS
7th October 2019 - 26th January 2020

This year, for the first time ever, The National Portrait Gallery will stage an exciting new exhibition which will explore Gaugin's life and work through his portraiture. Displaying approximately fifty original works from the mid-1880's and the Artist's life in France, through to his later and most infamous years spent in French Polynesia and finally up to his death in 1903; the exhibition will focus on how the artist moved away from Impressionism and towards Symbolism. Gaugin was able to make portraits that expressed meaning beyond the personalities of his sitters, sometimes by adding carefully selected attributes, others by placing his subject into a suggestive context. Included in the show is a group of self portraits which show how Gaugin created personifications including his self image as 'Christ in the Garden of Olives'.  There is ticket availability, but it is advised to book in advance online to avoid disappointment.

Human inhabitation of Mars is a challenge for design as well as science. Every detail, from the food we could eat, to the tools we would use is thought through in this immersive installation, with a full scale habitat designed by architectural studios HASSEL, and featuring original objects from NASA, the European Space Agency and SpaceX as well as the first spacesuit designed specifically for the Mars surface. There is ticket availability but it is advised to book online in advance to avoid disappointment.

INTO THE NIGHT: CABARETS AND CLUBS IN MODERN ART
4th October 2019 - 19th January 2020

This Autumn the Barbican Art Gallery launches a new exhibition, exploring the social and artistic role of Cabarets, cafes and clubs around the world from the 1880's to the 1960's. The exhibition offers an alternative history of Modern art that highlights the spirit of experimentation and collaboration between artists, performers, designers, musicians and writers, such as Toulouse Lautrec, Josephine Baker, Loie Fuller, Giacomo Bala and Josef Hoffman to name but a few. These creative spaces were incubators of radical thinking, where artists could exchange provocative ideas and create new forms of artistic expression. With over 350 works rarely seen in the UK, including paintings, drawings prints, photographs, films and archival material, there are also full scale recreations of specific spaces, such as the multicoloured ceramic tiled bar of Cabaret Fledermaus in Vienna designed by Hoffman. There is ticket availability but it is advised to book in advance online to avoid disappointment.

PRE-RAPHAELITE SISTERS
17th October 2019 – 26th January 2020

The Pre-Paphaelites were a Victorian group of artists who counted William Holman Hunt, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and John Everett Millais among their founding members. This major new exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery, however, does not focus on the artists, but tells the untold stories of some of the women who were depicted in their art, 160 years after they were originally exhibited. Through a display of previously unseen works and an extraordinary collection of paintings, photographs, manuscripts and personal items, the exhibition explores how the women were far more than just models, but rather creative influences, models and muses. Some, were artists in their own right, while others helped to shape the development of the movement alongside their male counterparts, and without them, it could not have succeeded. There is ticket availability but it is advised to book in advance online to avoid disappointment.

COSTUME AT THE NATIONAL THEATRE
3rd October 2019 – 1st March 2020

Featuring costumes from War Horse, Follies, Anthony and Cleopatra and many more, Costume at the National Theatre shows just some of the exquisite outfits produced by the theatre's costume department. Working on everything from muddy uniforms to giant caterpillars, the costume department sources, creates, alters, repairs, organises and maintains costumes for over twenty new productions each year. The costume hire department also circulates costumes from its stock of 70,000 to films, photo shoots, and other theatre productions. The team of 46 people also has to consider practicalities such as how to fit an actor into a corset in under 60 seconds, or how to create an outfit that will allow a flying harness to fit underneath it, while allowing it to still look light and airy. The exhibition offers never seen before, behind the scenes insight into the skill, thought and dedication that goes into the garments that take centre stage, and invites you into the world of the people who create them. There is ticket availability but it is advised to book online in advance to avoid disappointment.

LUCIAN FREUD - SELF PORTRAITS
27th October 2019 – 26th January 2020

This Autumn, The Royal Academy of Arts brings together more than 50 self portraits by Lucian Freud, in their Sackler Wing of Galleries. 'The Self Portraits' is the first exhibition to focus solely on his self portraits, and brings together artwork created in paint, print and pencil and etching plate. The works span seven decades and traces his development as a painter as well as his life, from the linear graphic style of his early career, to the fleshier, fuller portraits that made him a household name. In following his development from a young boy to an old man, the exhibition not only gives us an insight to the evolution of one of Britain's most prolific Portraitists, but also provides a candid study into the process of ageing. There is ticket availability but it is advised to book online in advance to avoid disappointment.
