MARCH NEWSLETTER

"The cock is crowing,
The stream is flowing,
The small birds twitter,
The lake doth glitter,
The green field sleeps in the sun;
The oldest and youngest,
Are at work with the strongest;
The cattle are grazing,
Their heads never raising;
The are forty feeding like one!
Like an army defeated
The snow hath retreated,
And now doth fare ill
On the top of the bare hill;
The Plowboy is whooping-anon-anon:
There's joy in the mountains;
There's life in the fountains;
Small clouds are sailing,
The rain is over and gone!”

William Wordsworth, March.

February has flown by, and suddenly we are in March. Brexit seems a distant memory now that we are in the throws of the worldwide disruption that has sadly been caused by Covid-19, but here in England, we've maintained our stiff upper lip and are sticking to our very British motto from World War Two:

"Keep Calm and Carry On"

We are still busy touring with our wonderful clients, our new website is now live and we have received great feedback from those who have seen it; (if you have a chance, sneak a peek at www.henriettaferguson.com), and we are thrilled to have been named WINNER in the Corporate Travel Awards for 2020. So all in all, its been a good end to Winter!

Looking forward to Spring, we are expecting a busy month ahead. There are many new and exciting events and exhibitions launching in London and due to popular demand, we are planning a greater expansion into Europe, so watch this space for more information on this over the next few months! Once again, we have added a few recommendations at the end of this newsletter for events which need to be booked in advance, as the British Summer Season is extremely popular and things sell out early.  As always, please don't forget to check us out on social media, @hftlondon, we have also launched a NEW Instagram feed this month, focussed on the beautiful cities we visit and tour in Europe, @hfteurope so don't forget to follow us there too!

GAUGUIN AND THE IMPRESSIONISTS
29th March 2020 - 14th June 2020

Gauguin and the Impressionists is a major new exhibition launching at the Royal Academy of arts at the end of this month.   There will be 60 paintings in all, many of which have never been seen before in the UK. The works in this exhibition come from the Ordrupgaard Collection in Denmark, and were amassed by insurance magnate Wilhelm Hanson between 1916 and the late 1920s. In 1951, Hanson's widow, Henny, bequeathed the home and their collection to the Danish state, which turned the property into a museum,  but while the museum is closed for renovation works this Spring, the Hanson's impressive collection of paintings will be making their temporary home at The Royal Academy. The exhibition begins by looking at the Impressionist's love of painting 'en plein air' with scenes of the Normandy coast, Paris and London by Monet, Pissarro, Sisley and Renoir. It will then explore the great artists that preceded Impressionism, with a selection of works by Ingres, Delacroix and Courbet. There will also be a section dedicated to women painters, with paintings by Berthe Morisot. The final part of the exhibition will look at the post-Impressionists; Gauguin, Cézanne and Matisse. The show will include eight paintings by Gauguin, who was heavily influenced by the Impressionists, before he went on to make his own striking innovations. This exhibition promises vibrant colours and sun-drenched scenes, as well as a few surprises. It will provide the ideal opportunity to see gems normally housed in Denmark, and explore a vibrant era in art history. There is currently ticket availability, but it is advised to book in advance online in order to avoid disappointment.

AMONG THE TREES
4th March 2020 - 17th May 2020

By drawing attention to the beauty, scale and complexity of trees and forests, the 38 artists in this exhibition turn our vision of the natural world on its head, inviting us to see it with new eyes. Among The Trees, transports us around the world – from Colombian rainforests and remote Japanese islands to olive orchards in Israel and a 9,550-year-old spruce in Sweden. By turns poetic, adventurous and thought-provoking, this group exhibition explores our relationship with trees and forests. Whether exploring the way that trees, with lifespans much longer than our own, challenge how we think about time, or revealing how they are intimately entangled with human affairs, these artists enliven and expand our appreciation of these remarkable organisms. Alongside sculptures and installations, drawings, paintings and photographs, there are artworks that celebrate the soaring scale of trees. These include a monumental sculpture cast from a 2,000-year-old olive tree by Ugo Rondinone; a cinematic portrait of a 30-metre-high spruce tree by Eija-Liisa Ahtila; and a vast forest of trees constructed entirely from cardboard by Eva Jospin. At a time when the destruction of the world’s forests is accelerating at a record pace, Among The Trees, avidly highlights the indispensable role that trees play in our lives and imaginations. There is currently ticket availability but it is advised to book in advance online to avoid disappointment.

GLYNDEBOURNE FESTIVAL OF OPERA
21st May 2020 - 30th August 2020

The Glyndebourne Operatic Festival is one of the world's oldest and most celebrated Opera Festivals. It was started in the mid-nineteen thirties by John Christie, an eccentric aristocratic landowner and Germanophile, who originally dreamed of emulating Wagner’s grand opera house at Bayreuth. His wife, the soprano Audrey Mildmay persuaded him to moderate his ambitions, and present smaller-scale operas in an opera house on their grounds that resembled a village hall. This was replaced in 1994 by a superb state-of- the-art building designed by Michael Hopkins, acclaimed as an architectural masterpiece and holding an audience of about 1200 in a classical horseshoe-shaped auditorium. The festival has become known as one of the highlights of the British Society Summer Season, with guests arriving for the event in Black Tie, and enjoying famous picnics on the lawns during the extended long interval, while enjoying the breathtaking views over the South Downs. This year, HFT is happy to announce that we are once again arranging exclusive luxury tours for this event. Please contact us directly for further information.
