FILTHY LUCRE: WHISTLER'S PEACOCK ROOM REIMAGINED
25th January 2020 - 3rd May 2020
Filthy lucre, an installation by American artist Darren Waterston, opens in the Porter Room at the Victoria and Albert Museum at the end of January. The installation is an immersive interpretation of James Abbott McNeill Whistler's famed Peacock Room, a sumptuous 19th Century Dining Room once housed a stones throw away from the V&A. In Waterston's reimagining, the Peacock Room is transformed into a magnificent ruin, crumbling under the weight of material decadence, to highlight the tension between art and money, ego and patronage. Initially invited by his friend and patron Frederick Leyland to consult on the room's colour scheme, Whistler proceeded to redesign the room while Leyland was away from London, causing a huge row that ended up splashed across the tabloids. There is currently ticket availability but it is advised to book in advance on line to avoid disappointment.

YOUNG BOMBERG AND THE OLD MASTERS
January 2020 - March 1st 2020
Marking just over a century since David Bomberg's (1890 - 1957) first solo show at the onset of war in 1914, in another first, this exhibition displays some of his earliest paintings alongside the works that inspired him. From Botticelli's Portrait of a Young Man, and Michelangelo's The Entombment, to El Greco's The Agony in The Garden of Gesthemane, to name but a few, the exhibition reveals how Bomberg's rebellious, youthful works drew inspiration from the paintings he most admired in the Gallery. Far from inhibiting him, these Old Master paintings helped to contribute to the language of early 20th Century Modernist art at its most audacious. Displaying his monumental masterpiece The Mud Bath, and nine other works alongside the Old master paintings, the exhibition reveals how Bomberg embraced the art of the past in order to leap forward towards the future. This is a free event, but please check public transport for delays and closures on the day.
