Another fall, another turned page: there was something of jubilee in that annual autumnal beginning, as if last year's mistakes had been wiped clean by summer”

Wallace Stegner

BEING HUMAN
5th September 2019 - permanent exhibition.

This exciting new exhibition at the Wellcome Trust will explore what it means to be human in the 21st Century. Divided into four sections Genetics, Minds and Bodies, Infection and Environmental Breakdown, this new display will present around 50 artworks and objects that reflect our hopes and fears about new forms of medical knowledge, and our changing relationships with ourselves, each other and the world around us. Among the items displayed will be, works by Yinka Shonibare, whose life-size 'Refugee Astronaut' will inspire discussions about topics such as climate change and globalisation, 'Medical Heirlooms' by artist Tamsin van Essen, whose ceramic works have been inspired by ancient apothecary jars, which represent that you don't just inherit physical heirlooms (like jars) from your ancestors, but also certain aspects of your own health and magical history. Not all the displays are artworks however. The exhibit will also include groundbreaking scientific objects, including a gene editing kit, and a handheld DNA sequencer. Combining Art and Science, this exhibition, is one that should not be missed. This exhibition is free.

WILLIAM BLAKE, THE ARTIST
11th September 2019 – 2nd February 2020

William Blake, was best known for his poetry, but he also created some of the most iconic images in British art. This September, Tate Britain opens the largest exhibition of the art works of William Blake in 20 years. Exhibiting over 300 original watercolours, paintings and prints, there is also a recreation of the small cramped domestic room in which Blake originally showed his art in 1809. In another room, Blake's dream of showcasing his works at enormous scale are made reality using digital technology. Radical and rebellious, Blake has been an inspiration to many artists, musicians, poets and performers worldwide. In today's world and political climate, his personal struggles, his technical innovation, his vision and political commitment have perhaps never been more pertinent. This is an important exhibition, which must not be missed. There is ticket availability but it is advised to book online in advance to avoid disappointment. Tickets from £18.00

ANTHONY GORMLEY
21st September 2019 – 3rd December 2019

Following his triumphant exhibition of works this Summer on the Greek island of Delos, acclaimed sculptor Anthony Gormley presents his most significant solo exhibition for over a decade at the Royal Academy. A conversation between old works and new, it will span his wide ranging practice and exploit the scale and light of the RA's architecture. Early experimental sculptures, objects and drawings often made using his own body as a primary tool, material and subject are brought together with large scale environments made specially for the RA. Using organic, industrial and elemental materials, such as iron, steel lead, seawater and clay, our understanding of matter itself is put to the test, scrutinising what it means to have a body, when every 'thing' is essentially space and energy. Sculpture for Gormley is a means of interrogating space and place, and his preoccupation with the space within, treads the line between the body as a container of feeling and an abstract entity. There is ticket availability but it is advised to book online in advance to avoid disappointment. Tickets from £18.00

SPECIAL FORCES: IN THE SHADOWS
September 2019 - 18th November 2019

Extreme training. Secret missions. Total dedication. Explore the hidden world of the Special Forces. They operate all over the world and we do not always know when or where they are active. They carry out four types of mission: counter terrorism; surveillance and reconnaissance; strike; and support and influence and this major exhibition at the National Army Museum presents ideas of security and secrecy through the lens of the Special Forces. Discover who these soldiers are, the skills they need, and the operations they've undertaken both at home and abroad. Originating in the Second World War, the Special Forces was made up of five elite units each with a unique role in British security and military operations. The exhibit looks at the work of all these units from real life events like the Iranian Embassy siege to portrayals in popular culture, film and television, as well as the skills and dedication needed to make the cut. There is ticket availability but it is advised to book online in advance to avoid disappointment. Tickets from £8.00.
