Castellterçol Escudella Festival
Located just a 55-minute drive from the stunning city of Barcelona, the picturesque rural town of Castellterçol plays host to the historic Escudella Festival. This charming celebration of rustic food and camaraderie sparks lively debates about its origins. Some believe it began as a gesture of friendship, enticing visitors to the town’s carnival festivities in February with free, locally sourced delicacies. Others argue that it originated centuries ago as an act of charity, providing nourishment to the less fortunate during difficult times, who eagerly anticipated this special day of hearty meals, warmth, and vibrant entertainment.
Regardless of its precise inception, today, the festival stands as a remarkable spectacle, drawing enthusiastic participation from both locals and international visitors. They flock together to revel in the abundant culinary traditions and captivating carnival celebrations.
In the early morning, before the festivities commence, a group of village cooks gather at Plaça Nova to prepare the iconic escudella. Setting up long rows of tables and outdoor kitchens, they diligently craft this delicious stew, enough to satiate the appetites of approximately four thousand people. By midday, after receiving blessings from the parish priest and a local celebrity, the escudella is distributed among the eagerly awaiting audience congregated in the square. This nourishing feast provides the perfect sustenance to fully enjoy the afternoon’s entertainment and the festivities that extend into the late evening.
