The Tower Bridge

Castles & Fortresses

Visit Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest continuously inhabited castle in the world. It is the Official Residence of Her Majesty The Queen, with a rich history spanning over 900 years. The Tower of London is one of the most famous and well-preserved historic buildings in the world. Since the first foundations were laid more than 900 years ago, the castle has been constantly improved and extended and evolved into the splendid example of Fortress, Prison, Place of Execution, Arsenal, Royal Mint and home of the Crown Jewels.

Historical Royal Palaces

Kensington Palace is famous as the residence of Princess Diana and Princess Margaret. It was also the birthplace of Queen Victoria where she spent her childhood under the watchful eye of her mother. It was Kensington Palace where she was informed of the death of her uncle King William IV in 1837 and became Queen. Today it is the residence of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Built in 1514, Hampton Court Palace is situated along the River Thames and was a favourite residence of the infamous Tudor King Henry VIII. Five of his wives lived here and the ghosts of two (Jane Seymour and Catherine Howard) supposedly still haunt it. One of the most impressive sights is the Great Hall, England’s last and greatest medieval hall decorated with sumptuous tapestries, along with the Tudor Kitchen. The stunning gardens with its great maze was planted in 1702 along with and the world’s largest grape vine.

Museums

The Victoria and Albert Museum’s collection span two thousand years of art in virtually every medium, from many parts of the world, and visitors to the museum encounter a treasure-trove of amazing and beautiful objects.

The British Museum was founded in 1753 and is one of the most important museums in the world with over 6 million objects covering 2 million years of human history.

The Natural History Museum is the home of the dinosaurs. The building itself is a masterpiece of Victorian architecture. You can peer into some of the museum’s 60 million pickled specimen jars, see several very rare Martian meteorites and peer into a minuscule phial of star dust which is older than the Earth itself!

Art Galleries

The National Gallery is one of the most impressive Art Galleries in the World. It houses over 2,300 paintings of the greatest European Artists from the 13th to 19th Century. Covering 6 centuries of artwork painted by some of the greatest artists in the world, from Jan Van Eyck, Leonardo da Vinci, George Seurat, Claude Monet, to Vincent Van Gogh. The Tate Modern is the largest and most visited museum of modern and contemporary art in the world. If you are visiting London you simply should not miss the opportunity to experience this extraordinary establishment.
